Who?

The name 'James' was very common – the NT lists at least 5 men with the names 'James', two of whom were Jesus' disciples and one of whom was His half-brother.

Survey of the Choices – Author

James the son of Zebedee & brother of John: This man was the most prominent "James" in the gospels. He was one of the "sons of thunder," originally a fisherman with John (his brother), along with Peter and Andrew. He became a disciple of Jesus and was later martyred by Herod Agrippa I, as recorded in Acts 12:2 (AD 44). Unlikely that this James could have written this epistle before he was killed, and there is no tradition arguing that he did.

James the son of Alphaeus, another disciple: Very little is known about this James, the brother of Matthew (Levi). He was another disciple of our Lord, but again, there is no hint that he is the one who wrote this epistle.

James the father of Judas the disciple (Judas Thaddaeus): Even more obscure. Not a likely candidate.

James the brother of Jude & half-brother of our Lord: Most probably the author of this epistle. He is not so identified, but much about his character is revealed that is in keeping with what is known about him. The fact that he does not so identify himself (as our Lord's brother) may be an indication of his humility, but it also reveals the standing and personal authority he had in the opinion of his readers. James the brother of Jesus became the leader of the church at an early date (Acts 12:17; 15:13-21; 21:18; Gal 1:19; 2:9,12). He was a man well known and highly esteemed in the new Christian community.

"James, a servant of God and of Jesus Christ" was an entirely sufficient identification to them. The brevity of it only makes the author obscure to the modern reader.

Other Supporting Reasons

The language of the epistle is similar to James' speech at the Apostolic Council (Acts 15:13-21), and to the epistle subsequently sent out to Gentiles (Acts 15:23-29). Circumstances reflected in the epistle fit the date and situation in which James of Jerusalem would be writing.

The epistle also has a primitive Christian theology which fits well into the kind of early Jewish-Christian environment associated with James the brother of Jesus.

James apparently was an unbeliever during the ministry of Jesus (John 7:3-5). He even challenged Jesus and misunderstood his mission. A post-resurrection appearance of Christ to him (1 Cor 15:7) probably led to his conversion, as he was with the believers in the upper room (Acts 1:14).

He was called the "righteous" or the "just" because of his faithfulness to the law and his devotion to prayer. He was said to have "knees like those of camels" because of his much time spent in prayer. He was also known as James Adelphotheos, which means the brother of God, James, the Brother of the Lord, and James of Jerusalem.

According to Josephus, James was martyred in AD 62.

Understanding The Lordship Of Jesus Christ

This is a short sharing as follow-up from our cg discussion last week, which we unfortunately did not have sufficient time to go through. I figured this would really help each of us in understanding the great importance of knowing the Lordship of our beloved Saviour, although as commonly understood but always taken for granted. This sharing is loaded with scriptural references, so do use biblegateway or whatever medium that allows you rapid pinpoint of various scriptures for the full understanding!!
(You can flip your bible also if you are very very zhai! LOL)

Understanding the FOUNDATION

1. The price that Jesus Paid
- Christ is OUR Lord because of the price which he has bought using HIS blood.
- "You are not your own; you were bought at a price'' (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 NIV)
- Not by silver or gold, but by the precious blood of Jesus. (1 Peter 1:19)

2. Jesus exalted as Lord
- "At his name, every knee would bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord" (Philippians 2:5—11)
- Salvation comes only by acknowledging the Lordship of Jesus Christ over our lives. (Romans 10:9)

3. Jesus Demanding Loyalty
- Hard truth that should we love anyone else on Earth more than Jesus, including our parents and spouse, we are not deemed to be counted as His Sheep!. (Luke 14:26,27)
- But putting His love foremost, we can expect an overflowing of compassion and stronger love for our loved ones within our community. We are called to FIRST love Him, and then our neighbours!
- Its all the way brothers and sisters! No looking back to "greener pastures". (Luke 9:62)

Understanding the APPLICATION

1. Jesus, Lord over our Mind
- The Mind is a battlefield, master it and win the war. (Matthew 16:23)
- Following the world's thinking patterns and your thought-life reflects the values of the world. Thoughts and ideas process to actions and constant action proceeds into habit and sin.
- Do NOT be conformed, not even a chance! (Romans 12:2)
- Jesus KNOWS your EVERY thought. Yes, even right now! (1 Chronicles 28:9)

2. Jesus, Lord over our Body
- Flee from sexual temptation and evil desires. (1 Corinthians 6:20)
- But offer our bodies as holy and acceptable sacrifices. Availing of our time and effort, letting Him use us, even in our weaknesses. (Romans 12:1)

3. Jesus, Lord over our Decisions
- Asking the Lord, what to do, where to go at every juncture and cross-road. Acknowledging that His decisions matter over our lives. We are not living just for ourselves! (Bought with a price - see above)
- Lean not on our own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

4. Jesus, Lord over our Finances
- Money is root of all evil. True to a certain extent, but careful stewardship renders abundant blessings from the master! (Matthew 6:24)
- Give abundantly, not only when you have money, but when we are poor! (2 Corinthians 8:2-3)
- Make our bank in heaven, not earth! (Matthew 6:19-21)

5. Jesus, Lord over our Work
- Finally, work is essential for everyone of us. Lazing and slacking is unacceptable in God's eyes!
- Work, with excellence, with all our hearts, but working for the Lord, not for men! (Colossians 3:24-25)
- In the same manner, find time to rest and seek the Lord in quiet moments. Rest is biblical!! Don't overwork! (Luke 10:38-42)

This is really a last minute post for an RBC Seminar scheduled tomorrow at St Andrew's cathedral. Both me and Pris are really interested in attending (Plus go see see the beautiful church as well!!), yeah but of course, the teachings on a lasting relationship in a messed up world.

I really feel that it is quite apt for some of us in this point of our lives now. (Come on, let's now be shy about this! LoL) And yes, I pray that this would enrich and encourage all of us in one way or another regarding the complicated issues of love and relationship in this sin depraved society of ours today!

Hebrews 6:4-6 and the Possibility of Apostasy

This is undoubtedly one of the most controversial and frequently debated passages in all of Scripture. It would not be going too far to say that those who believe a genuine believer can forfeit (or lose) his/her salvation appeal to this passage more often than any other. Read the passage closely.

Who are these people who “have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away”? It is important for us to know because “it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame.”

There are probably a dozen or more interpretive options of this passage that may be found in the commentaries and journal literature. It isn’t my purpose to interact with them here. Rather, I am focusing solely on the question of whether the terminology in vv. 4-5 would lead us to conclude that these individuals were born-again, justified, believers.
Are these born-again Christian men and women? If so, the doctrine of eternal security is shattered. Or is it possible for a person to experience some form of spiritual “enlightenment” and to “taste” spiritual blessings and to “partake” of the Holy Spirit and yet never know Jesus in a saving way? I believe the answer to this latter question is Yes. Let me begin by giving six reasons from the book of Hebrews itself why these people are not born-again believers who have apostatized.

First, the situation described in vv. 4-6 is illustrated in vv. 7-8. There we read, “For ground that drinks the rain which often falls upon it [this drinking of frequent rains refers to the blessings of vv. 4-5: enlightenment, partaking of the HS, tasting spiritual blessings, etc.] and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; but if it yields thorns and thistles [this corresponds to the “falling away” of v. 6a], it is worthless and close to being cursed, and it ends up being burned.”
Rain falls on all kinds of ground, but one cannot tell from that alone what kind of vegetation, if any, will appear. The picture here is not of ground that receives frequent rain, yields life and vegetation, and then loses it. The picture is of two different kinds of ground altogether. One responds to the rain [spiritual blessings and opportunities] by producing bountiful vegetation, while the other is barren, lifeless, and thus condemned. Likewise, people who hear the gospel and respond with saving faith bring forth life. Others, however, who sit in church and hear the truth and are blessed by the ministry of the HS but eventually turn their back on it all are like a field that never yields vegetation and thus comes into judgment.
As Wayne Grudem notes, “the idea of land that once bore good fruit and now bears thorns is not compatible with this picture. The implication is this: While the positive experiences listed in verses 4-6 do not provide us enough information to know whether the people were truly saved or not, the committing of apostasy and holding Christ up to contempt do reveal the true nature of those who fall away: all along they have been like bad ground that can only bear bad fruit. If the metaphor of the thorn-bearing land explains verses 4-6 (as it surely does), then their falling away shows that they were never saved in the first place” (“Perseverance of the Saints: A Case Study from Hebrews 6:4-6 and the Other Warning Passages in Hebrews,” in Still Sovereign, Baker; 156-57).

Second, in 6:9 we read of a significant contrast: “But beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking this way.” The “better things” in view are stated in vv. 10-12, things like “work” and “love” and “ministry” and “diligence” and “full assurance of hope” and “faith” and “patience” and “inheriting the promises.” These “things” are “better” than the experiences of vv. 4-6 precisely because they “belong to” or “accompany” salvation. In other words, “the author says he is confident that most of his readers have better things than the people he described in verses 4-6, and these things are better in that his readers also have things that belong to salvation. This implies that the blessings in verses 4-6 were not things that belong to salvation” (Grudem, 159).

Before going further, let’s summarize vv. 7-12. “Verses 7-8 describe the people in verses 4-6 as unfruitful land that repeatedly bears thorns and thistles, and thus indicate that they were never saved. Verses 9-12 say that the readers, in general, have better things than the temporary experiences of vv. 4-6, and that those better things include salvation. Therefore both verses 7-8 and verse 9 indicate that the people in verses 4-6 who fell away never had salvation” (Grudem, 160).]
Third, according to Hebrews 3:14 (and 3:6), “we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end.” Note well: he says we “have become” partakers of Christ, not “will become” or “are now partakers,” if we persevere in faith. In other words, holding fast in faith, i.e., persevering, proves that you became a partaker of Christ in the past. Failing to hold fast, i.e., apostatizing from the faith, proves that you never were a partaker of Christ. Apostasy or falling away (6:6a) doesn’t mean you once were in and have now fallen out of partaking in Christ. It means you never were or never became a partaker in the first place.

Fourth, we read in Hebrews 10:14 that “by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” Here we are told that for those who are now being sanctified (i.e., indwelt by the HS, growing in holiness by faith) “the offering of Christ on the cross has perfected that person for all time. For all time! In other words to become a beneficiary of the perfecting, justifying work of Christ on the cross is to be perfected in the sight of God forever. This suggests that Hebrews 6:6 does not mean that those who re-crucify Christ were once really justified by the blood of Jesus and were really being sanctified in an inward spiritual sense” (John Piper, Sermon, 5).

Fifth, our author concludes this letter with a prayer relating to the fulfillment in us of the blessings of the New Covenant. He prays that God would “equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ” (13:20-21). The promise of the new and “eternal” covenant is that God will put in his people a new heart and cause them to walk in His ways and not turn away from doing them good (see Ezek. 11:19; 36:27; Jer. 24:7; 32:40). Thus, Piper concludes that “in verse 21 he says that it is not finally dependent on us whether we persevere in faith and bear fruit. It is finally dependent on God: He is working in us that which is pleasing in his sight. He is fulfilling the new covenant promise to preserve us. This means that Hebrews 6:6 would contradict the new covenant if it meant that people could be truly justified members of the new covenant and then commit apostasy and be rejected. That would mean that God did not fulfill his promise to ‘work in them what is pleasing in his sight.’ He would have broken his new covenant promise” (Piper, 5).

Sixth, we must take note not just of what is said of these people in vv. 4-6 but what is not said of them that is usually said of Christians. Typical terms used to describe believers, such as regeneration, conversion, justified, adopted, elect, faith in Jesus, are conspicuous by their absence. This is more than merely an argument from silence when we consider the way Christians are described in the book of Hebrews itself. Here is a listing of what is true of the true believer, all of which are absent from the description of those who apostatize in 6:4-6.
(1) God has forgiven their sins (10:17; 8:12)
(2) God has cleansed their consciences (9:14; 10:22)
(3) God has written his laws on their hearts (8:10; 10:16)
(4) God is producing holiness of life in them (2:11; 10:14; 13:21)
(5) God has given them an unshakable kingdom (12:28)
(6) God is pleased with them (chp. 11; 13:16,21)
(7) They have faith (4:3; 6:12; 10:22,38,39; 12:2; 13:7; etc.)
(8) They have hope (6:11,18; 7:19; 10:23)
(9) They have love (6:10; 10:33-34; 13:1)
(10) They worship and pray (12:28; 13:15; 4:16; 10:22)
(11) They obey God (5:9; 10:36; 12:10,11,14)
(12) They persevere (3:6,14; 6:11; 10:23)
(13) They enter God’s rest (4:3,11)
(14) They know God (8:11)
(15) They are God’s house, his children, his people (3:6; 2:10,13; 8:10)
(16) They share in Christ (3:14)
(17) They will receive future salvation (1:14; 7:25; 5:9; 9:28).

Someone might object by saying: “O.K., typical descriptions of the saved are not found in 6:4-6, but neither are typical descriptions of the lost found there either!” Grudem responds: “I agree that the phrases [in 6:4-6] alone do not match the author’s descriptions of the lost, and they do not indicate that these people are lost (before they commit apostasy). But that is just the point: Before they commit apostasy their spiritual status is uncertain. It remains to be seen whether they are among the saved or the lost. They have not yet given decisive indications either way. That is the reason the author warns them not to turn away – they are still at a point where a decision to be among the saved or the lost must be made” (171).

What about the terms used in 6:4-5 (enlightenment, tasting, partakers, etc.)? On the one hand, it is certainly the case that all Christians experience these realities. But do only Christians experience them? Or is it possible for these experiences also to be true of people who have been repeatedly exposed to the gospel and to the benefits it brings, yet without personally embracing the person of Christ as Lord and Savior? Let’s look at each one in turn.

They have “once been enlightened” – Have true Christians been “enlightened”? Yes. But this term need mean no more than to hear the gospel, to learn or to understand. “Certainly such intellectual understanding of the facts of the gospel is an important step toward saving faith, but it does not itself constitute the element of personal trust in Christ that is essential to faith” (Grudem, 142-43). All of us know people, perhaps family members, who have been repeatedly exposed to the truth of the gospel, understand what it means, can articulate the claims of Christ with incredible precision, yet refuse to put their trust in Him as Lord and Savior. Thus, whereas all true Christians have been enlightened, not all those who are enlightened are true Christians.

They have “tasted of the heavenly gift” and “the good word of God” and “the powers of the age to come” – This certainly points to a genuine spiritual experience. But must we conclude that it was a genuine saving experience? These are not strangers to the gospel or to the church. These are people who have come under conviction of the HS, who have experienced some degree of blessing both through common grace and through their close, intimate contact with genuine believers. Perhaps they have been healed. Perhaps a demon has been cast out. They have heard the Word of God and have come to taste and feel and enjoy something of its power and beauty and truth. They have felt the “wooing” of the HS and have seen great and wonderful things in the body of Christ. Those in Matthew 7:22-23 preached, prophesied, performed miracles, and cast out demons in Christ’s name . . . but were not saved. Jesus said to them: “I never knew you; depart from me, you evildoers” (v. 23). These, then, “have tasted” the power and blessings of the new covenant, but they have not personally prized, cherished, embraced, loved, trusted, treasured, or savored the atoning death of Jesus as their only hope for eternal life.

They have been made “partakers of the Holy Spirit” – Whereas the word translated “partaker” can certainly refer to a saving participation in Christ (cf. Heb. 3:14), it can also refer to a looser association or participation. See Luke 5:7; Heb. 1:9 (“comrades” or “companions”). These people had in some way come to share in some aspect of the HS and his ministry. But in what way? Must we conclude that it was a “saving” way? Why does our author not use terminology that would put the question of their spiritual status to rest, such as “filled with” or “baptized in” or “indwelt by” the Holy Spirit?

They have in some sense “repented” – There is a “sorrow for sins” and a turning from them that even non-believers can experience. This is clear from Heb. 12:7 and the reference to Esau, as well as the “repentance” of Judas Iscariot in Mt. 27:3. Paul refers to a repentance “without regret that leads to salvation,” the implication being that there is a repentance that does not lead to salvation. As with “belief” and “faith”, so too with “repentance,” we must always distinguish between what is substantial and saving, on the one hand, and what is spurious on the other.

Wayne Grudem provides this helpful summation:
“What has happened to these people? They are at least people who have been affiliated closely with the fellowship of the church. They have had some sorrow for sin and a decision to forsake their sin (repentance). They have clearly understood the gospel and given some assent to it (they have been enlightened). They have come to appreciate the attractiveness of the Christian life and the change that comes about in people’s lives because of becoming a Christian, and they have probably had answers to prayers in their own lives and felt the power of the Holy Spirit at work, perhaps even using some spiritual gifts (they have become ‘associated with’ the work of the Holy Spirit or have become partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the heavenly gift and the powers of the age to come). They have been exposed to the true preaching of the Word and have appreciated much of its teachings (they have tasted the goodness of the Word of God). These factors are all positive, and people who have experienced these things may be genuine Christians. But these factors alone are not enough to give conclusive evidence of any of the decisive beginning stages of the Christian life (regeneration, saving faith and repentance unto life, justification, adoption, initial sanctification). In fact, these experiences are all preliminary to those decisive beginning stages of the Christian life. The actual spiritual status of those who have experienced these things is still unclear” (153).
I conclude that the people described in 6:4-5 who, according to v. 6, “fall away” are not now and never were born-again believers. They are not Christians who have “lost” their salvation.

I believe the spiritual state and experience of those described in Hebrews 6:4-6 is virtually identical to that of the first three of four soils in the parable of the sower (see Matthew 13:3-23; Mark 4:1-9; Luke 8:4-15). In that parable, only the fourth soil is called “good” and subsequently bears fruit. The other three represent those who hear the gospel and respond with varying degrees of understanding, interest, and joy, none of which, however, bear fruit that would testify of genuine spiritual life. That is to say, they experienced “enlightenment” and “tasted” the goodness and power of the ministry of the Spirit and the blessings of the kingdom, yet turned their back on the truth when trials, troubles, or temptations came their way. Their apostasy was proof of the falsity of their initial “faith” (see esp. John 8:31; Heb. 3:6,14; 1 John 2:19).

Pain and Growth

I am currently reading the book Boundaries with kids by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend. Though I'm not a parent but a teacher, this chapter speaks to me so much that I couldn't help but to share it.

Lesson number one in parenting and life is "Growth involves pain." Lesson number two is "Not all pain produces growth." Learning to tell the difference is the key to having someone stay on the bottom, or grow past where he or she is.

When I played basketball in junior high, our coach had a big banner across the locker room that read, NO PAIN, NO GAIN. This saying became our team's mantra as we conditioned, trained, and practiced, sometimes past the point we thought we could endure.

I had experienced the reality of this phrase before, but I had never understood it quite like this. If I'm not struggling, I'm not getting better at what I have to do. This lesson has served me well for life. If you are independent, you are used to doing things that "hurt" so you can receive something you desire.

For example, as I write this chapter, I am very tired. I'm tired from traveling, and I'm tired of writing. It's a weekend, and I don't like working on the weekend. In addition, I haven't managed my time too well lately, and I'm behind. But as I write, I also know that to continue through the struggle is the only way to get what I desire. I want this book to be published. I want you, the parent, to have it. I want to fulfill this part of what I think God has called me to do. And if the book sells, I can also buy food.

As I write at this late hour, I also groan and gripe about it. Luckily, no one is listening. But what if I called my mother and cried to her about how difficult writing is, how hard it is to make things work in today's world, how cruel life is? And what if she had no boundaries herself, felt "sorry" for my pain, and sent me a check? What if she "compassionately" listened and agreed that I should not push myself so hard? (Don't worry, this is not killing me. But good complainer I am, I could make it sound that way for a codependent mother.) I could be assuaged out of my suffering enough to just let it go and feel okay about not accomplishing my task.

I can actually remember just such a day when I was in the sixth greade and tried this with my mother. I had had mononucleosis and had missed a month of school. When I came back, I was overwhelmed with the amount of work I had to catch up on. I remembered going to my mother and saying, "I do not want to go to school today. It's just too much. I can't take it anymore."

I will never forget what she said. I can see her and hear her words tonight as if I were standing there today: "Sometimes I don't want to go to work either. But I have to go." Then she hugged me and told me to get ready for school.

I was hurting. I was tired. I was in pain. But my mom knew it would not harm me to keep going. She evaluated my pain - the pain of momentary discipline - and encouraged me to keep going. Today, I am thankful for her boundaries. Without them my life would be full of half-done projects and unfulfilled goals. Later, I talked to her about this, and she told me parts of the story I had never heard before.

When I was four years old, a childhood bone disease caused me to lose the use of my left leg for two years. At times I had to use a wheelchair, and at other times I wore restrictive braces and walked on crutches. I was unable to get around much and play with other children.

As you can imagine, this was difficult for my parents to watch. However, when I see home movies, I see an active youngster wheeling through the zoo, going to birthday parties, and hopping around on braces and crutches. For a crippled kid, I did a lot.

I never knew what my parents had to go through to help me become this self-sufficient. The orthopedist told them that they were going to "ruin" me if they did things for me. She told them that they had to let me suffer through learning how to walk on crutches, steer the wheelchair, and explain to others what was wrong with me.

It was extremely painful for my parents to watch me struggle. They already felt sorry for their four-year-old son, who had lost the ability to walk like other children. They wanted to rescue me when I cried about having to wear the brace, or when I was in pain. Instead, they spanked me for trying to walk on my bad leg (something that would have deformed me for life). After she disciplined me, my mom revealed later, she would have to call a friend and cry.

My mother also told me of one day when I was struggling to get up the stairs to church. She overheard someone say, "Can you believe those parents, making him do that? How cruel they are!" But she was able to keep the limits. Another day, my crutch slipped on the marble steps of the post office; I came tumbling down, shaken, bruised, and cut up. But Mom continued to make me go up stairs on my own.

I cried, complained, and tried all of a four-year-old's games to manipulate my mom and dad into not allowing me to suffer the pain of learning self-sufficiency. But they kept their limits, and we made it through.

The end result is that I was soon able to get around and live a reasonably active and normal life with other children, and my leg eventually healed. Today I am grateful for their making me go through pain that hurt me, but did not harm me.

The parent who hears every cry or complaint as the ultimate concern will never develop boundaries and character in the child. When your children cry about homework, chores, or a missed opportunity because they did not do their part, what are you going to do? How you answer this question will have a tremendous effect on the course of your child's life.

To instill a sense of ownership and to encourage a personal search and longing for God's Word, I'm hereby formalising smaller teams in our cell group. The roles of each team, at the moment, is very simple. :)

For each week when there is cell gathering, I'll assign different question(s) to each team. During cell, each team will share what they have found out during their week of research, and share with the entire cell group. After the specific team has shared, the entire cell is encouraged to share anything else that have relevance to the question.

Not only does this prepare us well for each cell gathering, it also allow us to engage and use our time more effectively. With fingers crossed, we might actually start ending on time. *loL~*

I'm pretty positive that this change will bring about a deeper walk with God, good for maturing as Christ followers as we learn to reflect on what God has done for us, have more meaningful sharing that encourages one and all, and fostering deeper bonds with each other.

As with teams, there will be team leaders. Responsibility for team leaders is also fairly straightforward. Other than researching for the question(s), all you have to do is to turn up and facilitate discussion within your team prior to sharing with the entire cell. :)

I shared about the importance of this verse in refuting various false religious views during cell. For the benefit of all, the key points are as follows.

Why is Genesis 1:1 important?

It is important because it refutes the following false religious views:

Atheism - The theory or believe that God does not exist.

From Scripture, we don't even have to argue whether or not God exist. He simply exist, right from the beginning.

Polytheism - The belief in or worship of more than one god.

From Scripture, we see that there is only one true God.

Materialism - The doctrine that nothing exists except matter and its movements and modifications.

Again, from Scripture, we know that we do not come by accident. There is a Creator, and we are His creation.

Pantheism - A doctrine that identifies god with the universe, or regards the universe as a manifestation of god.

This is a popular belief in Egypt and Greece in the ancient days. From Scripture, we understand that God is the Creator of all things, but He does not manifest Himself in those created things to be worshipped.

A Cleansed Past: The Room

After I read the story, I was crying in my heart and felt loved by Jesus. I hope to share the story with all of you. It may take some time to read.

In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room. There were no distinguishing features save for the one wall covered with small index-card files.

They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endlessly in either direction, had very different headings. As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read "Girls I Have Liked." I opened it and began flipping through the cards. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one.

And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was. The lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn't match.

A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their contents. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching. A file named "Friends" was next to one marked "Friends I Have Betrayed."

The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird: "Books I Have Read," "Lies I Have Told," "Comfort I Have Given", "Jokes I Have Laughed At." Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: "Things I've Yelled at My Brothers." Others I couldn't laugh at: "Things I Have Done in Anger," "Things I Have Muttered under My Breath at My Parents." I never ceased to be surprised by the contents. Often there were many more cards that I expected. Sometimes there were fewer that I hoped.

I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived. Could it possible that I had the time in my twenty years to write each of these thousands, possibly millions, of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.

When I came to a file marked "Lustful Thoughts," I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size, and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed contents. I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded.

Suddenly I felt an almost animal rage. One thought dominated my mind: "No one must ever see these cards! No one must ever see this room! I have to destroy them!" In an insane frenzy I yanked the file out. I had to empty it and burn the cards. But as I took the file at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it.

Defeated and utterly hopeless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh. And then I saw it. The title bore "People I Have Shared the Gospel With." The handle was brighter than those around it, newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.

And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that the hurt started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key.

But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him. No, please, not Him. Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus.

I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards. I couldn't bear to watch His response. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own. He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes. Why did He have to read every one?

Finally He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn't angered me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands, and began to cry again. He walked over and put His arm around me. He could have said so many things. But He didn't say a word. He just cried with me.

Then He got up and walked backed to the walls of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card.

"No!" I shouted, rushing to Him. All I could find to say was "No,no," as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn't be on these cards. But there it was, written in red so rich, so dark, so alive. The name of Jesus covered mine. It was written with His blood.

He gently took the card back. He smiled a sad smile and continued to sign the cards. I don't think I'll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side. He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, "It is finished."

I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There were no lock on its door. There were still cards to be written.

This is more than a heart-warming story. It's not imaginary. The dream is a picture of what Christ truly accomplished when He died on the cross. He literally took our guilt on Himself. And this meant much more than just having His name on a card. It meant receiving the punishment from God that all those sinful words and actions deserved.

Here is what's important to understand: It is only by repenting of our sins and putting our faith in Christ that this substitution can take place. We each have a "room" containing all our sinful deeds and thoughts. But just because we admit this or feel bad about it doesn't mean we're forgiven. Remorse can't save anyone. Only faith in Christ can. Only trust in His death and resurrection for us.

Something that I read today that makes loads of sense.

We do not need the grace of God to withstand crises—human nature and pride are sufficient for us to face the stress and strain magnificently. But it does require the supernatural grace of God to live twenty-four hours of every day as a saint, going through drudgery, and living an ordinary, unnoticed, and ignored existence as a disciple of Jesus.

A little scriptural reference that I thought will explain it better in the "ordinary, unnoticed, and ignored existence as a disciple of Jesus" sense.

Matthew 6:1-4 (NIV)
1 "Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Is there any assumption that you have that you have to do exceptional things for God? Performing miracles of healing, or maybe evangelising to the lost? The text further explains.

It is ingrained in us that we have to do exceptional things for God—but we do not. We have to be exceptional in the ordinary things of life, and holy on the ordinary streets, among ordinary people—and this is not learned in five minutes.

As we continued to live our lives, let us always remember to empty our lives and thoughts, that we may be earthen vessels where our Treasure may dwell, that we may be of use to His Kingdom.

Let's discipline our earthly bodies and minds to the glory of our God. Praise the Lord!

Questions of the Heart:

-Is there really only one perfect match - one soul mate for each person?
-What's the difference between having standards and being too picky?
-Are all the really great ones already taken?
-What's the best way to meet the person who's right for me?
-Should I take matters into my own hands, or should I wait for God to bring him or her to me?
-How do I know God's will?
-How does one really know he or she is in love?

Whew! Quite a list. But actually, if you look at the questions again, you will find there is one pivotal question. If you answer this one, all the rest will come into focus. The pivotal question is, Can God's will be discovered?

Can God's will be discovered - or Will I Ever Find Mr. or Miss Right for Me?

There is ample evidence from the Bible that God's will can be discovered. The Scriptures use many phrases to assure us of God's leadership, including "He leads me beside quiet waters," "guide me in your truth," "your word is a lamp to my feet," and "seek and you will find." Of this one thing you can be sure: God wants you to know His will even more than you want to receive it! [Comment: God does not necessarily promise a mate when you seek Him. What He does promise is an abundant, meaningful life.]

The question is not, Can I find God's will? but rather, How can I find God's will?

First, if you want God's blessings, then live a life He can bless. Having a mate is just one kind of blessing. Proverbs 18:22 says, "He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord." However, check out what the apostle Paul recommends in 1 Corinthians 7:6-9:

I say this as a concession, not as a command. I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has the gift, another has that. Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

God says singleness can be a gift! Okay, so how do we know we're not choosing someone else present?

To discern God's will, start with the known. In the Bible, God provides several verses that explicitly say, "This is God's will for you."

Praise be to God for the recent gathering at Elaine's house! It was amazing for the abundant grace we've received, from the fine weather, to the enthusiasm and safety of everyone, to the food that we enjoyed, let's all thank God for them! :)

First and foremost, thanks Elaine for the opening up the venue, looking through the menu of what to order, and the constant emails to finalise everything.

Thanks to our top chefs, Adriel, Stanley, Troven, Min Shiung, any one else whom I may have missed out.

For Adriel and Stanley who reached there earlier to help set up the stuff and fire.

For Gabriel who brought the ultimate fan, without which might have to start the fire over and over again. loL~ I think part of the reason why the food was good was because we had a good fan. What do you guys think? :D Also for leading the way for Fiona, John and myself to Elaine's house.

For Min Shiung and Yiyi, our leaders, for bringing the disposables, else we would have ran out of supplies, and also for that bottle of red wine!

For Harry too, for that bottle of sparkling wine. yuMz~!

For Siew Hor, who probably had the biggest role of evangelising to the aunties. You left a deep impression in their lives, and a great example for the rest of us to follow as well. :)

I've included two versions, which is unlike what I usually do, which is just posting from the NIV.

Making a comparison, here's the summation of both.

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power through God to demolish strongholds.

We cast down imaginations, demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

I think in verse 4 the important thing is to recognise that this divine power that we wield is provided through God, and not of our own. In verse 5, I would also think "casting down imaginations" should be included from KJV, as it aptly describes men and his willful imaginations. Putting together with NIV, we see a clearer picture, as one might be pretentious and act humble, when in his imagination he thinks he's higher than others.

Of course, choose one to memorise will do. :D

Cell Group - Then and Now

Looking at Lionel's photos taken from last Friday's BBQ reminded me of how far we've come as a cell group. From 1 shepherd to another, many have come and left, yet God has revealed His faithfulness and added more to the flock. This cell group has certainly come a long way. May we continue to enjoy the wholesome fellow(fei-lou)ship and bond in Christ Jesus.

As Stan had asked, can we imagine our cell group 10 years from now?

At cell yesterday, we've covered the first 3 questions to the book "If God Is Just, Then Why Doesn't He Punish The Bad People Right Away?" Please finish up the rest of the 3 questions on your own. Should you have any questions about this topic, feel free to share it during our next cell meeting.

With the above, we'll be doing the next book for our next cell discussion on October 7. It'll be APQ Book 6 "If God Is Merciful, Then Why Did He Create Hell?" As again, please read this prior for a more meaningful discussion. :)

Pastor Colin preached that we should not take our faith for granted. He said that it is possible for a believer who has regularly been attending church for the past 20 years to drift away from God. He or she may one day decide to be openly defiant and stop attending church.

He added that the person describe above can be a spiritual leader or even pastor. In his previous church, there was this sister who was leading the youth group. She had great enthusiasm for the Lord and in-depth knowledge of the bible that all the youths would always sit up and listen to her. Suddenly, she refused to attend church. Pastor Colin and a few brothers were puzzled and went over to her house to find out why. When asked, she said that church goers are hypocrites and it is best she worship at home. The brothers tried to persuade her by quoting verses from the bible. However, she rebuked by throwing many verses back at them. The brothers were stunned by how well she knows the bible and were almost won over by her.

One question that I bothered me was, "Is attending church an essential element to increase your faith?"

I once believe that one can still walk with God by reading His Word and worshiping Him at home. Thus, going to church is not necessary. My thinking gave a 180 degrees turn after I experienced the power of spiritually-filled individuals/groups. They can help propel your faith much more than when you do it alone. With this, I remember a quote, "If you want to go faster, go alone. If you want to go further, go together."

Pastor Colin ended off by saying, "Let us not to take for granted that our fellow brothers and sisters will be in cell or in church this weekend (or from this day onwards)." Hence, we should pray for our continual faith in the Lord, including that of our brothers' and sisters'. At the same time, it is crucial to note that it is our own responsibility to take care of our faith and make sure it is renewed and strengthened on a regular basis.

Prayer for perseverance in faith

"Lord, I thank You for suffering and dying on the cross for me, and for rising again to defeat death and hell. I believe my enemy is defeated because of what You have done. I am thankful that you have given me all authority over him. I have faith that by the power of Your Holy Spirit I can successfully resist the devil and he must flee from me.

Show me when I am not moving in faith. Teach me to use that authority You have given me to see the enemy defeated in every area of my life. In Jesus' name I pray."

New Game For Cell!

And so the memory verse game evolves~ :D

This is how it's going to work from henceforth.

Everyone will prepare their own memory verse.
During cell, the person who was asked to share his/her memory verse during the last cell group meeting will ask a random person to share.
This new sharer will share the memory verse of the week, and everyone is encouraged to commit it to memory.
Rinse, lather, and wash from step 1. loL~

The whole objective of this game is that everyone will constantly meditate upon God's Word, knowing that His Word is Truth and Life. In times of despair and darkness, His Word will shine forth!

Psalms 119:105 (KJV)

And we're fully confident that His Light will cast out the darkness, for the Word says,

Are you thirsty for God?

I didn't buy the Rock Foundation book written by Pastor Rony, but I'm blessed in the way that I do get portion of the book from the teaching materials. I found this part particularly interesting and hope to share with any new believers like myself:

Have you ever been thirsty? I mean really thirsty. So thirsty that your whole body seemed to be crying out for a drink;

so thirsty that your throat felt like it had dry dirt balls in it; so thirsty that you would give anything for a drink.

Ahhhh! That was good. I sure like the nice cool water.

Now, Jesus wasn’t talking about being thirsty for H20 – water. He was talking about being thirsty for God.

He said that if we were thirsty, we would have to do the drinking. And He wants us to be so full of Him that rivers will flow out of us.

When we drink, we satisfy our own thirst, but when the rivers of water flow out of us, the people around us will benefit. We won’t have anything for the world unless we are filled with God – His love and power.

That sounds easy, but how do we drink of God? Well, every time we respond to the Holy Spirit, we take a drink of Him.

When the Holy Spirit begins to move in a service, move with Him. Instead of saying, “I’m not going to do anything unless God makes me”, just jump in!

People respond to the moving of the Holy Spirit in different ways; they laugh, shout, jump around, run, dance, etc. By responding to His move, we are taking a drink. And every time we take a drink, we get more and more filled with God.

It is just like every time I take a drink of this water, I get more filled up with it. Every time I move with the Holy Spirit, I get more of God in me.

26 Aug 2009: Memory Verse - The Lord's Prayer

Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)
"This, then, is how you should pray:

" 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.' "

Many a time have I heard of incidents whereby people modify this verse in context and assume that this is how we should pray. It would go something like "....And lead me not into sickness, but deliver me from the [insert ailment here]."

If one is doing this with the right heart and is truely sincere, I believe that it will be a nice prayer that will be received. However, if one does this with the assumption that it will work, and does it out of ignorance or insincerity, well, perhaps it may not be the most effective of prayers.

I would believe that it was not intended for us to use this prayer as a contextual template to pray effectively. Rather, it is Jesus's teaching of the proper way to pray, not constraining us to the words, but rather showing us a good direction of our prayers.

Before I start explaining, do look at the verses that came before this prayer, especially the part on not doing hypocritical acts of righteousness as well as praying like a hypocrite among the masses, as I find that there is great meaning in those passages as well.

From what I have learnt from this prayer, it is one of servitude and reverence unto God, with the knowledge that God knows our desires and needs.

"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
This portion recognises God's reverence, the coming of His kingdom onto this world, as well as acknowledging God's will in all things.

"Give us this day our daily bread."
This part refers to the seeking of God's providence for our needs, which in this case a symbol of our most basic need for sustenance. I tend to see it as representation of all needs, whether physical or spiritual.

"Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."
Debts in this case refers to sin, as Jews referred sin as debts in those days. Easily, this verse tells of asking for forgiveness from God, as well as letting God know that just as He has forgiven us, so shall we remember to forgive others that have done us wrong. One good reason for this can be seen in verse Matthew 6:14.

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."
The final part asks God not to allow us to fall into temptation, and to deliver us from the schemes of the devil.

So lets summarise:

Recognise God's reverence and will in our lives

Seek God's providence for our needs

Seek forgiveness in our sins, as well as acknowledging our forgiving of others

Asking for God to help in our resisting of temptations, and if we do fall into temptation, to deliver us from the devil's scheme

Finally let me conclude with my after-thoughts. Flowery language and complexities do not really add value in prayer. Make it simple, sincere, and always in love, be it love for God or in the love for others. Seek the right motives in prayer, and watch as God's faithfulness blossoms in your life :)

Joy vs Happiness

Nehemiah said, "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." -Nehemiah 8:10-

When I read that the joy of the Lord is my strength, I was contemplating the difference between joy and happiness. A check in the dictionary shows the results below:

- HAPPINESS is an emotion usually directly related to circumstances that are currently happening.

- JOY is attitude of the heart. It is not necessarily based on something positive happening.

Difference?

Happiness is an emotion and temporary; joy is an attitude of the heart.

I may feel happy because I won $10 million through lottery. However, the excitement of gaining the wealth wears off after I spent it. Even if I were to invest the money instead of spending it, I will be happy again only if I profit in the market.

Joy, on the other hand, brings peace in the middle of a storm. We may go through hard times, disappointments and times of testing, but God works through all these to bring us joy. God is always there to help us with our problems, and through the process we find joy. We can rejoice through these testings because the joy of the Lord makes us strong.

Initially, I find it confusing. The phrase says "the joy of the Lord gives me strength". Does it mean that the Lord is joyful and hence, it gives me strength? How can His joy contribute to my strength? Then I found out that I can view it in another perspective. If I were to seek him in times of my trials, He will be joyful and help me through my difficult times. This is where I gain my strength. (God is good and hence, he will be joyful to help us. It is similar to the positive feeling we get when we help the needy. The needy draws strength from us and we feel contented from helping them.)

Satan tries everything in his power to steal your joy by tempting you with things that will temporarily give you happiness but at the same time drift you away from God.

So... Hold on tight to your joy!

Holy Spirit and baptism

Praise the Lord! The accident passed with little hoo-ha. Eddie's parents did not make a big fuss and my principal have not yet called me to drink 'kopi' with her. Eddie was vomitting and on tube feeding while he was hospitalized. Thank God he is discharged from the hospital and can be fed via the mouth.

In the subsequent weeks, I will be teaching on the topic of Holy Spirit. To tell you the truth, I have zero knowledge. I believe some children will know the topic better than I do (>o<)! Nevertheless, I must fight the battle and equip myself with the knowledge.

Do let me share the little knowledge that I've gathered. I bet most of you know better than me. Let's begin: v(^o^)v (Say 'yay!')

There are 3 distinct types of baptism:

1. Salvation in 1 Corinthians 12:13 is called the baptism by the Holy Spirit into the Body of Christ. This is what happens when a person receives Jesus Christ as Savior, also called the New Birth.

2. Water Baptism in Acts 22:16 is by a pastor (or other church leader) and is a public testimony of how much the Christian wants to obey and follow Jesus Christ. This baptism is by immersion in water and signifies that the person being baptized understands the need for repentance from sin.

3. Holy Spirit Baptism in Acts 1:8 describes when the Christian allows Jesus to immerse him or her in the Holy Spirit's fullness. This type of baptism is also referred to in the Bible as the Spirit "falling upon", "coming upon", or being "poured out upon" the Christian.

Baptism with the Holy Spirit is the second most important gift a Christian will receive. A pre-believer cannot receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Once we know the person is a Christian, it is important to explain that God wants all Christians to experience a deeper work of the Holy Spirit. The fullness of the Holy Spirit brings more spiritual power for intensified Christian service (see Acts 1:4,5; 1 Corinthians 6:19).

To sidetrack a little, I came across a medical study that proves Holy Spirit praying:

Courage is fear turned into prayer

Yesterday, I was holding on to three children and one ran away. One of the children I was still holding on to was mouthing a blunt metal hook tied to a door using a piece of string. In a hurry to get the runaway child back, I said in a stern voice, "Eddie, don't mouth the hook." Then, I pulled his hand towards the direction of the runaway child. The next thing that happened was that I heard a loud shrill. When I looked at Eddie, I was shocked that the hook pierced through his cheek from inside his mouth. I was screaming in my heart, "No!!! God... Tell me what to do..." I was so afraid that he might pull the hook and tear the side of his mouth that I removed it immediately. As I brought him to the first aid room, I was deeply apologetic for causing pain to him.

As I was feeling sorrowful last night, I chanced upon this passage:

We often think that to have courage means to be unafraid, but the opposite seems to be true: courage is the ability to take action despite our fear. When faced with a seemingly insuperable task or situation, a courageous person realizes the limits of her resources; however, she cannot avoid or escape the overpowering situation. The supremacy of that which she must face forces her to her knees, and although the task seems impossible, something within her senses that it is not. As she tackles the impossible, she falls back on another seeming impossibility: God. Because the task at hand exceeds the limits of her abilities, she must resort to something beyond these limits, and here we have the origin of prayer. Prayer is a courageous stand in the face of an overpowering task. The courageous person prays because she is afraid. Hence, courage is a quality of being humble and understanding the limits of our resources.

After reading that, I fell on my knees and waited upon the Lord. I believe things will soon be fine because God said that all things work together for good to those who love him and have been called according to his purpose.

I am down with a cold and a slight fever these few days. Would like to praise God for all the caring friends who sent me get well wishes (you know who you are) and a message below (Adapted from "How to be your best when you feel the worst" by Casey Treat) :

The apostle Paul had more than his share of challenges. In 2 Corinthians 12:10, he wrote, “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” Think for a moment about the kinds of challenges he mentioned in this passage. None of them sounds fun.

“Infirmities” literally means sicknesses, diseases, feebleness, or weakness. We rebuke illness. We pray against it. We believe God to be healed from it. But when we get sick anyway and are forced to deal with our physical infirmity, we may find our greatest strength. We may find our grandest faith. We may find our deepest character. We may find a phenomenal relationship with God that we never knew we could have.

“Reproaches” means insults and injuries. It's no fun when people don't like us – and yet that kind of rejection may cause us to examine what we truly believe in and what we stand for. Does it really matter what someone thinks about us? Are we trying to please people, or please God? Are we here to make people like us, or are we here to obey our Father in heaven? You may find more strength if you quit being a people-pleaser and instead see reproaches for what they are: opportunities to grow stronger.

What did Paul mean by “needs” (or necessities) and “distresses”? Remember, this is the apostle Paul, who had been to the third heaven, to Paradise. This believer had been in the very throne room of God and there saw things he couldn't even tell us about – and yet here he is, back on earth, with needs and distresses.

Just because Paul had needs, however, didn't mean he was outside of God's will. His needs simply gave him an opportunity to get stronger. In the same way, your own needs can help you to find greater strength and a richer relationship with God. Allow your needs to drive you to God, not away from Him. Remember that Jesus told us, “your Father knows what you need before you ask him” (Matthew 6:8, NIV). He knows your need. He does not despise you for it. And yet it's still true that “you do not have, because you do not ask God” (James 4:2, NIV). Let your needs help you to find greater strength in God and a deeper relationship with your Father.

Paul also mentioned “persecutions.” Remember that Jesus said we'd receive a hundredfold when we give to the kingdom – but that it would come with persecution (Mark 10:30). We like the hundredfold increase, but not so much the persecution! We want to be filled with the Spirit, but we don't like it when people talk about us because we pray with the Spirit. We want to be a part of something that changes the spiritual landscape of our land, but then we get nervous when people persecute us because of what we believe.

But in the persecution, Paul tells you, you'll find a greater relationship with God. If they hated his Lord, they're going to take a few shots at you – but before you die, you can take a few to heaven with you. You have a decision to make: are you a Christian because it's nice, or because you love God?

The last word Paul mentions here is “distresses”. Paul said that he found his greatest strength in distress and in the pressures of life. Who of us learns much through our victories? We just celebrate, have fun, and think we're cool. But in our hard times? In our losses and in our difficulties? That's where we learn more, we change more, and we become better people. When everything is going well, we don't think much about praying and seeking God and changing. But when things go bad, sometimes we get really spiritual. Let's walk with God all the time – in the good times and the bad.

When you're weak, you'll find your greatest strength. When you're down, you'll find your highest high. When you face your worst battle (and they're never fun), that's when you'll find your greatest victory.

To any Christian who might want to become a teacher

Last week was my first sharing session at sparklight. A few days later, God dropped me a message through swordlight regarding teaching. God's timing is so zun! (timely)

In James 3:1-2, he said that not many should presume to be teachers. Why is that so?

To teach is not to have the freedom to say whatever you want or to enjoy your influence over others. Being a teacher has a price to it. It is precisely because their words have the capacity to have so much influence over others that teachers are more strictly judged by God (Luke 12:48, Hebrews 13:17).

3 specific reasons why not many should be teachers:

1. Teachers have greater accountability. They are supposed to have more knowledge & hence, they would have greater responsibility & accountability.

2. James said that we all stumble in many ways. When that happens, it would cause others to stumble in their relationship with God. A teacher needs to be watchful over their personal life.

3. It is difficult to bridle one's tongue, including the teacher. A controlled tongue is a good reflection of a controlled life & character of a person. However, people do lose control of it every now & then.

In conclusion, it is because of the fact that teachers have great potential & power to influence others, only people with proper motivation should consider to teach.

This might sound weird: I want to thank God for this warning~* d(^0^)b

Prayer For Troven

Sorry for the silence in a while guys, I've been very busy trying to accomplish too many overdue things. With the new year just in, I'm again back to work and crazy as before. *loL~*

I just got an sms from Harry today, and later in the day a call, that our brother Troven met with an accident at work, resulting in a fractured wrist. I could only imagine what happened via what Harry described; a chain fell down and hit Troven's wrist.

Although it's an unfortunate event, both of us agreed and gave thanks to God because the chain fell on Troven's wrist, not anywhere else.

Please pray in our Lord Jesus' Name for brother Troven for a speedy recovery, and a healing with no complications. Personally, I thought it'll be good to help pray for his safety at work and a better career prospect in this coming year.

Thanks all and I'll see you guys tomorrow! :)

Co-leading Cell

I actually had the intention to write this post since last week, but work, as always, was and is still a hazard. At least I manage to steal some time off tonight to pen down my thoughts; not bad. :D

First of all, initially when Min Shiung and Yiyi mentioned the idea of co-leading the cell, it came as a shock to me. Me being me, I always preferred a lower profile regardless of anything that I do. I am never the kind to stand up and assume responsibilities. Never. *loL~*

As Min Shiung and Yiyi were sharing about why they chose me; the shock sank in, revealing something clearer. I remembered at that time, I was reading the book of Matthew, so while my memory still served, this verse came to me.

Matthew 4:19-20
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him.

When the first disciples were called by Jesus, they did not ask, "Err... why me?" Nor did they say "Let me think about it leh..." Min Shiung and Yiyi were kind enough to give me time to think over it, but I thought it to be a calling from God, and I said "ok". :)

It may seem like a reckless decision; in fact it is! To a certain extent I still feel I'm not up to it. Reason? I'm such a young Christian!

I still remember five years ago, I was a staunch free-thinker who ridicules people speaking in tongues, that they were in fact babbling nonsense. I attended church very unwillingly, and what the pastors spoke gave me drowsy spells instead.

I still remember four years ago, God's Word started to make a _little_ sense to me. There was no revelation whatsoever, and I was still dwelling in sins with an ever willful heart.

I still remember three years ago, God's Word began to take shape in my heart. I got baptised that year, and though still stumbling along the road, I began to walk.

Two years ago, as I finished my National Service, was the fateful time when I joined this cell group. Through bonding and sharing, we grew together in our walk with God and with each other. Praise God!

Just last year, I finally began to serve after months of procrastination and prayers through the church's choir, Praislight.

That's my very short biography, and I hope it dint bore you. :P The other part which amounted to my unpreparedness-cum-initial shock is that I have not read the Bible from cover to cover, not even once yet.

Nonetheless, as I learn my way around in life, in work, in relationships, in the Bible, in co-leading cell, I believe God will always show a way in everything. That's another message that I can share with everyone: God always shows a way; He will not place things in front of us that we cannot handle. We just have to trust Him and always walk with His faith.

Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Finally, I'm very happy to be able to serve everyone in areas more than my usual weekly-long-winded-sharing. *loL~* As I learn to be a better leader for God, I hope that you guys will be patient with me if I do anything wrong.

Father Lord, thank You for all the wonderful siblings You have placed in our cell group. Through holy meetings and gatherings, we are able to grow and bond strongly together in Your Holy Name.

You set our days right O Lord, and we continue to trust that Your plans are there to prosper us and to teach us how to lean and rely more on you than on our own strength. Indeed Father, that it is only when we are weak, will we find Your mighty arm holding us together, giving us the strength we need, renewing our spirit daily.

Let us not falter in our walk with You Lord. Your Word is the lamp to our feet and the light on our paths. I pray that You will guide our way as a cell to bring Your Good News to the people outside our cell, into Your house O Lord.

Bless this cell group Father, that we may have the wisdom to do what's righteous in Your eyes, keeping Your faith, and seeking only Your qualification and praise. May your plans be revealed and Your will be done in our lives Father.

Occasionally some things will come along the way, touches your heart in its deepest corners, triggers the emotion centre of your heart and the floodgates of your eyes will just give way.

I wanted to post this video yesterday, because it made me burst into tears when I was just trying to kill time over lunch before I head off to church. I just watched it again, and well... you already know what happened.

Stories like Team Hoyt are indeed meant to strengthen us through all kinds of difficulties and struggles. Like Dick Hoyt (the father) who gave his all just to spend more time with his son and allow him to experience more of life, the same way has God wanted us to experience more of life through the blood of Jesus Christ.

I love my Father, and I'm not ashamed to make it known to the world. Pray that His amazing strength will work in us, and let us not fail to continue to spread His Word and love to those around us. I had done so little for Him thus far, and I can do _so much more_.

We can do all things in Him who strengthens us.

When asked what one thing Rick (the son) wished he could give his father, his reply was "The thing I'd most like is that my dad would sit in the chair and I would push him once."

I really want to thank God for this heart of his, for it really inspired and touched me deeply. For many years of my life, National Day probably just meant a plain and simple public holiday; a day to have fun and be free.

The question is how are we able to experience the fun and freedom now, if our forefathers never paid the price? It was a price that we could *never* comprehend or experience; the pain, suffering, poverty and struggle. How many of us actually know how it feels like to _struggle to survive_?

Even as I write this post, strong emotions are crashing upon my heart. I'm thankful for God's protection over this land, that we may have peaceful days, a clean government with no known corruption, an island that's free from natural disasters, and a considerably safe society that we can be assured of our safety when we're out on the streets.

All these are things that are too easy to be taken for granted when we are born and raised in a time of peace. With this song, I do feel a lot more appreciative for this land that I stay and live in. This is the place that I call...

This is the song by Casting Crowns that I shared during cell tonight, and as promised, here it is. :)

Just wanted to share some things before jumping straight into the song. In the lyrics of the song, I believe we all can see ourselves. We are always in the middle for God; sometimes hot other times cold, sometimes righteous other times in sin.

Yet in all of these situations when we can't even see ourselves, it's just amazing that God always manage to find us. Always. He never let us go just because we sin again, He never refuse to listen to our concerns, and He never abandon us.

Even when we are somewhere in the middle, His mighty arms are always outstretched forth to us, waiting for our return like the prodigal son. His love never fails.

With eyes wide open to the differences,

Not too sure if you guys have heard of this song called "The Word Is Alive" by Casting Crowns? It contains a very strong message that really encouraged me, and I hope it will encourage you and all who stumbles upon this blog post too. :)

The Bible was inscribed over a period of two thousand years, in times of war and in days of peace; by kings, physicians, tax collectors, farmers, fishermen, singers and shepherds. The marvel, is that a library so perfectly cohesive could have been produced by such a diverse crowd over a period of time which staggers the imagination. Jesus is its grand subject, our good is designed, and the glory of God is its end.

Overworked, But God Is Always Around

The last month saw me working too hard on a single project, and I fell sick from sore throat, which led to flu, and of course, cough. Even though I tried a couple of methods to cure, I am still coughing, albeit slowly recovering. Guess my immune system is pretty whacked. :P

While I was busy working, quiet time with God was also chewed away. It was especially so for the week that just past, seeing me OT till hours when I am the only one left in the building. I felt detached; being away from Him for too long is never a good thing. :S

So that's possibly why I love serving in my ministry so much, because it brings me close to God every weekend, serving His people, and being amidst my brothers and sisters who all share the same joy with me. :D

I'm talking about THE kind of joy that overflows from deep within your heart, so hard to contain that it feels as if it wants to burst out, warms your nerves and yet chills your spine, and leads your muscles to produce the brightest kind of smile you thought you never had. *lol~* That's the kind of joy I experience when I'm serving God. :)

Watching miracles of healing by the grace of God every Miracle Service also brings refreshing strength to my tired soul. And yesterday was one such night. :)

From the start of the service till the end, I could feel the fresh anointing Spirit of God filling the corners of the sanctuary, and I felt great peace and joy in my heart which I could not feel for the past week.

To top things off, Li Nanxing (李南星) and Chen Tai Ming (陈泰明) also came to our service! It was extremely encouraging when the both of them, being public figures, responded to the salvation call and (re)dedicated their lives to God. From the stage, we could even hear fellow Lighters clapping and cheering!

Praise God! :D

A Decision

Dearest brothers and sisters,

Hope this post finds all in great health! :)

As a very recent decision, I decided to stop and start removing "Our Daily Bread" entries from this blog.

The reason is pretty obvious: post rate for "Our Daily Bread" is high, and all our personal sharing of experiences and testimonials gets buried to somewhere which is hard to find.

Our personal sharing entries are what I felt to be of greater importance, since it helps to encourage each other in times of need, and people who stumbles upon our blog finds us growing strongly in faith together. Not an easy decision, but I hope to find support in this decision from you guys. :)

Greetings From France!!

Hey Guys!

We're GREAT! Thanks for all your concerns and prayers through the week! We've just settled down in our Hostel in Grenoble and are getting used to the lifestyle here. Unfortunately, in Grenoble, it is as hot as it can get in Singapore! Afternoon temperatures can hit a high of 28 - 29 Deg! So yea, we brought all the thick clothing for nothing~~~ >_0 (Well, at least can use them for the tour) Haha. We spent 2 days in Paris before moving down south to Grenoble. France is a beautiful place with lots and lots of land. However, standard of living here is high! So we gotta live like paupers most of the time here. Haha

Oh yea, something to share. When we were in Europe, we visited alot of cathedrals and churches. We saw the many statues and pictures of Christ on the cross and in His glorified form. (Almost half of all the paintings in the Lourve are about Christ) And although its mainly catholic, nonetheless, looking at all these statues and paintings seemed to bring the reality of Christ's death on the Cross for us. Both me and Pris felt a deep sense of serenity and holiness in the eyes of the Lord, and we just want to share and encourage that indeed Christ is so real as He is right now in our very hearts!

So yea~ having that thought in mind, we really dun feel that alone out here anymore!! Heehe, not to mention of course we got each other as well. And for you guys there whom somehow or rather feeling lonely or dejected by circumstances, fret not! For the joy of the Lord is our strength! Praise God! Bless all of you and take care! We miss ya all!
